No tabs

We all know what tabs are – most of us probably started out on guitar with them. But I think that’s how far that relationship should go.

Tabs are great for beginners but there comes a time when you have to progress to the next level. They’re quick and convenient but therein lies the flaw – they make learning songs too quick, without any great consideration to what is constructing the sounds produced.

I’ve not used tabs for a while now but only for the past month have I tried to figure out songs just by listening to them. It’s a far more rewarding process. Doing things this way, I truly feel I am understanding more clearly and thus getting better at playing, composing and listening; you just can’t get that far purely off tabs.
