New ideas

“Every idea has been done before”, Dan reassured me during our last lesson when I expressed difficulty in composing music which didn’t sound too contrived or just plain unoriginal.

Shine’s resident guitar wizard continued his insight by suggesting I start compositions by taking common, often used chord progressions and playing around with them until they naturally evolve into something different; with this approach there is no fear in creating something that has already been done because, at least in part, it already has.

One progression Dan suggested working on was I major, V major, VI minor and IV major. In C, that is, C, G, Am and F. Coincidently, that is the exact chord progression of the first song I learnt on guitar (“Turn into” by Yeah Yeah Yeahs).
